Cambridge City Hockey Club’s Women’s first team secure much needed Vitality England Hockey Division 1 South victory at Slough

Cambridge City moved off the foot of the Vitality England Hockey Division 1 South table thanks to a 5-2 win at mid-table Slough on Saturday.

Last time out against Harleston Magpies, City created a total of 25 chances but failed to convert any of them.

However, this time around they were much more clinical to chalk up only their second victory of the campaign.

Miriam Marti-Palet and Amie Hunt both converted corners before debutant Maddy Murphy banged in a reverse stick rocket shot.

Murphy then capped off her maiden appearance for the team with a second goal before Hunt scored an overhead volley when the home goalkeeper had saved the ball high into the air off a Kat Petch shot.

Head coach Poppy Martin said: “This season has not been easy for us so far but the team has been improving and developing week on week and maintained momentum and belief.

“It was fantastic to see all of their hard work and progress translate into an incredible performance and result to secure three points. We will continue to push on now and look ahead to our next six games, hoping to replicate Saturday’s success.”

City will have home advantage on Saturday (February 25) when they play host to league-leading Isca & University of Exeter.

Meanwhile, Cambridge City II remain in East Women’s League Premier Division title contention following their 5-1 home win over Bury St Edmunds.

Jess White got the ball rolling for City when she converted a penalty corner before braces from Kara Kilbourn and Emma Owens wrapped up the comprehensive win.

In the East Women’s League Division 1 North, Cambridge City III earned a 2-2 draw at Wisbech Town.

Millie Ely and Katie Maude-Barker were both on target for City, who followed that up 24 hours later on Sunday to thrash Spalding 6-0.

Ely scored two more goals alongside a Ciara Comley hat-trick and one from Hannah Roberts to move City a point clear at the top of the table.

Cambridge City IV lost 1-0 in their East Women’s League Division 2 North West trip to Newmarket, but Cambridge City V fared much better at home against Wisbech Town II in the East Women’s League Division 3 North West.

They won 9-0 courtesy of goals from Anna Gomez (4), Maegan Green (2), Becky Hayward, Freya Lockwood and Steph Birkwood.

The one-sided result helped to move the team 10 points clear at the summit.

Cambridge City VI are third in the East Women’s League Division 4 North West standings following a 4-1 home win over Newmarket II.

A brace for Charlotte Denny-Gouldson and goals from Viv Ronco and Hattie Emerson secured the victory for the hosts.
